AMR Surveillance Clinic // 9 December // Primer on Antibiotic stewardship

(Not: Örnek vaka paylaşımı eurosurveillance@who.int adresine yapılmalıdır)

Dear colleagues,

We kindly invite you to the third AMR Surveillance Clinic on Thursday, 9 December with Prof Håkan Hanberger, from 9 am to 10.30 am (Copenhagen time). The topic is “Primer on Antibiotic stewardship". In this session, Prof Hanberger will discuss the rational use of antibiotics for the treatment of systemic infections at somatic hospitals with acute care function. Particular focus will be paid to the empirical treatment of the febrile patient arriving at the hospital with a new and yet undiagnosed bacterial infection, including choice of antibiotics in the absence of empirical treatment guidelines, de-escalation during treatment, change of treatment during the course of the infection.

Please use the following link to register for the event:

To enhance the learning experience, and for the opportunity to receive feedback specific to your situation, we kindly ask you to prepare and share with us, no later than Friday 3 December, one uncomplicated clinical case with a brief background regarding the antibiotic treatment chosen and the course of the infection and one complicated clinical case, where the course of the disease and the choice of antibiotic treatment proved to be challenging. In addition, we suggest you take some time to go through the online lectures part of the course “Antimicrobial Stewardship: A competency-based approach” (link here). Watching these videos before the meeting will greatly boost your learning process and enhance your ability to interact with our experts. The videos are available both in English and Russian.

Prof Håkan Hanberger is a senior consultant in infectious diseases in critical care, professor at the University of Linköping, and chair of the Swedish Reference Group of Antibiotic and WHO consultant. He is the leader of a research group studying antibiotic resistance (ABR) and hospital-acquired infections (HAI) in low/middle- and high-income countries. His interests are in the fields of surviving, sepsis, critical care, interventions against ABR and HAI, and mechanisms of ABR.

  • What is the AMR Surveillance Clinic?

The AMR Surveillance Clinic is an opportunity to connect with the CAESAR Network and to receive hands-on support on common issues related to AMR. Each session will focus on a selected topic of interest. These may include antimicrobials susceptibility testing (AST), antimicrobial stewardship, WHONET, quality management systems for laboratories, and more.

  • How does the AMR Surveillance Clinic work?

The AMR Surveillance Clinic is a virtual event open to your whole AMR network, for which you will receive a Zoom link to participate and share with relevant colleagues. Simultaneous interpretation to Russian and occasionally other regional languages will be provided. Once connected, you will be able to ask any question related to the topic on the agenda. For more active participation and a better learning experience, we may ask you to (i) share with us some information beforehand, and (ii) review relevant resources, in advance of the meeting.

  • When is the AMR Surveillance Clinic happening?

The AMR Surveillance Clinic is currently a monthly event, scheduled for the last Thursday of each month, from 9 am to 10.30 am (Copenhagen time). We will try to adhere to this calendar, but some changes may occur due to the availability of the moderators and speakers.
